University of Kansas Structural Biology Center

This facility was designed to provide an open collaborative research environment for interdisciplinary programs in drug discovery. This four-phase pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry research center was conceived, designed, and funded one phase at a time. Throughout the design process, multiple programming phases and graphics packages were prepared by the design team to facilitate procurement of funding.

The design solution organized the building into three primary research strands. Translucent interior walls were introduced throughout the facility to enhance collaboration. Open collaboration areas are strategically located throughout the building to inspire interdisciplinary interaction.

The 61,000gsf includes research facilities such as a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, x-ray crystallography, high throughput screening, the Center for biomedical research excellence, and the specialized chemistry Center.
